A leading US newspaper has detailed a number of innovative ways that organisations have used incentives and recognition.
In evaluating its Top Workplaces survey, the Detroit Free Press found that organisations were using a wide brief of strategies, from cooking employees a surprise Belgian waffle for breakfast to holding a funky shoe day for everyone in the company.
The newspaper explained that many are using such strategies to boost employee morale during one of the deepest economic downturns the state has seen.
Detroit is perhaps the worst-hit city in the US, as General Motors, Chrysler and Ford - the Big Three companies in the so-called Motor City - all faced bankruptcy after a multi-stage bail-out from the US government.
The Free Press explained that despite all the financial issues organisations are facing, "most are using creative, low-cost ways to keep workers motivated, even if they can't reward them with big wage increases or bonuses."
