Workers look for more secure jobs as redundancies hit

Date: 04/01/2011

Workers are willing to take a pay cut in return for a more secure job, according to a new survey.

The research, from peoplemanagement.co.uk, reveals a dip in employee motivation as more redundancies loom in 2011.

The figures show that nearly a quarter of people cite their job being under threat as their main reason for looking for other employment.

Almost 40 per cent of workers would be willing to take a pay cut if they were guaranteed a more secure position, and almost 30 per cent answered 'perhaps' to the question.

Rob MacLachlan, editor of People Management, said: "Our survey shows that it's still a tough environment out there for HR jobseekers, and with the threat of redundancies hanging over the public sector in particular, job security is understandably at a premium."

Over 70 per cent of workers in the study think that government spending cuts are having an impact on their search for jobs, making it harder for them to find another position.

Over Christmas hundreds of thousands of public sector workers prepared themselves for bad news as government spending cuts threatened to put 100,000 people out of work.

Government predictions forecast that 330,000 public sector jobs will be lost over the next four years.
