Workers 'need reasonable deadlines and targets'

Date: 24/03/2009

For employees to thrive in the current economic climate, bosses must set reasonable goals to achieve, otherwise staff performance will drop alongside morale, it is stressed.

Wallace Immen, writing for the Globe and Mail, spoke to Maurice Schweitzer, an associate professor of management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, who said that faulty goal setting can be overly detrimental to a company.

It was said that by keeping goals broad and not focusing on short-term revenue or market share, businesses will work out better in the long-run through growth and performance, with employees not as stressed or worried about their job.

Through the promotion of team building events, Mr Schweitzer added, competitive in-fighting can be avoided and an all-staff goal will be more achievable.

Earlier this month, the need for bosses to recognise hard work and reward employees accordingly was highlighted by Marvin Sadovsky, a leadership expert writing in Success Magazine.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19089937-ADNFCR
