Implement winter weather policies in order to maintain employee motivation and establish fairness for both staff and bosses this Christmas, an expert tells employers.
HR expert Elaine Courtney, managing director of Liverpool-based Courtney Consultancy Ltd, has advised bosses that the best way to avoid employment issues arising from the UK's cold weather is to establish a written policy.
Ms Courtney says that her firm has received more than 20 calls in the last week from workers looking for advice on where they stand should they not be able to make it into work due to the bad weather.
She said that there is a lot of confusion and worry with regards to pay and leave entitlement in these circumstances.
"Taking the time to devise a winter weather policy with a HR professional setting out the obligations on both sides is an effective way of eliminating this cold-weather confusion, and could also offset the risk of disciplinary or tribunal scenarios further down the line," she said.
Recently the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) advised bosses that in order to boost staff morale this Christmas they should offer bonuses and other remuneration packages.
