WHO awareness month highlights need for employee morale boosting
Date: 15/04/2010
April is Health Month in the eyes of the World Health Organisation (WHO), which estimates that 12 per cent of the world's population will personally encounter a mental illness that can be treated after diagnosis.
Newsday picked up the example set by the non-profit group, arguing that businesses need to keep morale high - perhaps through incentives and recognition - to avoid any potential issues cropping up for the benefit of workers and a company alike.
It argued that "depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder are some of the illnesses mental health professionals battle on a daily basis", adding that "stress-related illnesses are the most common experienced in today's society".
Newsday added that diseases can naturally affect people of all ages, ethnicity and class and as such, team building conferences or corporate events ought to be in place to keep problems in the open to be dealt with both quickly and effectively.
The WHO was established in 1948 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
