The UK internet advertising sector has registered an increase in revenues of 4.2 per cent to £3.54 billion in 2009, rising from £3.35 billion in 2008.
This has surpassed industry forecasts, according to the bi-annual Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP poll, adding that despite a decline in total UK advertising, internet spending continued to grow despite the economic outlook.
Guy Phillipson, chief executive officer of the IAB, asserted that in 2009, the advertising industry was hit hard but the internet continually proved itself to be a winning medium and could be a major factor in live brand experience promotion in the future.
He added: "In the past year we've seen some real success stories as search passed the £2 billion mark, and online video advertising experienced spectacular growth.
"And with sectors such as retail and consumer goods increasing their spending on the internet, we can look forward to a healthier 2010."
The IAB serves as the trade association for online advertising and has over 540 members.
