UK's tallest planned structure to be used as corporate events space
Date: 06/04/2010
Anish Kapoor's design for the ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture in London - the UK's 'answer to the Eiffel Tower' - is to be used to host team building corporate events and other get-togethers during the Olympic Games, according to London mayor Boris Johnson.
The landmark, which at 115m tall will be Britain's highest, will be one of many new Olympic venues after the addition of a viewing gallery and a restaurant at its very top.
Mayor Johnson said: "We will use the facilities at the top of the Orbit for corporate entertainment during the Games and will set out a business plan to this effect."
Around £3.1 million is being spent on the project by the London Development Agency, while most of the money is coming through raw materials provided by Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, thus giving the erection its name.
The London 2012 campaign's chance to unite the country behind the Games through the Olympic flame may have recently hit a stumbling block, after Somerset decided to refuse to have it pass through the county due to the costs of closing roads and safety.
