Training linked to increased wages

Date: 20/08/2010

As well as boosting employee motivation, training has been linked to higher remuneration among workers.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), it is "highly" likely that training is associated with higher wages.

In the government department's Training and Progression in the Labour Market report, the DWP claims that by taking a snapshot of business training in the UK, it is easy to show that high-earners received better training than their lower paid counterparts.

Moreover, those that are given more training are more likely to climb higher up the career ladder.

"It is possible that the causal links run in both directions," the department's report claimed.

The DWP also raised concerns that private sector workers may be getting less training opportunities than their public and charity sector counterparts.

"Rates of training appear highest in local government, and for those working in the non-profit sector," the department noted.

Recently, the British Chambers of Commerce claimed the government should scrap legislation which allows people to request time off work for training.
