Telling staff their hard work is appreciated will boost employee motivation, says expert

Date: 19/11/2010

Employee motivation can be increased by staff recognition schemes, according to an expert.

Tara Dalrymple, chief executive and founder of Busy Lizzie Lifestyle Management, said that employees like to know that their hard work is being appreciated.

"Create an employee of the month programme or a wall of fame to reward your staff's special contributions," she wrote for the Irish Independent.

She added that occasionally treating workers to a takeaway or dinner can boost morale.

Busy Lizzie Lifestyle Management provides an aide to time-pressed small and medium businesses, offering secretarial, administrative, sales and marketing skills.

And employers looking for a way to boost the morale of their workers should look to the big retailers for advice.

This week both Tesco and Siemens bosses announced they would be rewarding employees for their hard work with bonuses, gifts and extra holidays over the Christmas period.
