Telford to invest in conference facilities

Date: 21/09/2009

Telford & Wrekin Council and the Southwater Event Group have unveiled a joint scheme to revolutionise Telford town centre.

In order to create "a landmark area", new leisure facilities are to be created including hotels, public spaces, bars, restaurants, shops and new housing.

At the centre of the changes will be a significant extension to the prestigious conference centre in the town, which will aid it in attracting 200,000 extra team building corporate event attendees each year, while also creating one of the biggest office areas in Telford town centre.

Council leader Andrew Eade said of the project: "After many years of talk and false dawns about how Telford town centre could be developed we at last have a scheme that can be delivered.

"This is no longer something that will remain on paper but something that I am certain people very soon will start to see taking shape."

Earlier this month, Telford & Shropshire Conferences launched an online service using interactive and visual media to showcase the area to corporate events management and other organisations.
