Corporate team building events can help turn a company around and are particularly effective during a downturn.
According to Harry Hayes, director of solid waste management in Houston, Texas, team building activities were responsible for the department's recent dramatic improvement.
He claimed that as a result of team building corporate events, the department's "employees deliver better service now because they understand themselves better, and they understand the impact they have on our business as individuals".
The public body consulted with a specialist team building event provider to help boost team dynamics and improve productivity - a move which has so far saved around $5 million (£3.5 million).
Team building activities consultant Sharon Birkman-Fink, who worked on the employee motivation strategy, said: "Teamwork thrives where people perform to their full potential in positions that align with their core interests, their social needs and their work styles."
Recently, the Chartered Management Institute claimed that businesses need to ensure that staff members are engaged and that they feel valued.
