Tate Modern in redevelopment to become major venue
Date: 11/01/2010
A £215 million expansion of the Tate Modern has been launched by Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, in plans which will see it as a major venue by 2012.
Mr Johnson praised the lead architect, Herzog & de Meuron, which proposed the ultra high-concept addition which will likely boost the centre's attraction to those wanting to host a team building conference at the side of the Thames.
Gallery space also will be expanded by 60 per cent, which will aid the building in dealing with its five million visitors a year, though the Tate Modern was only originally designed to process around two million art lovers.
The Tate Modern raised £76.5 million for the work, which Mr Johnson is looking forward to seeing completed.
He said: "Not only will it add to the excitement around the 2012 Games, it will extend the potential benefits of this great temple of art even further south to the Bankside area."
The Tate Modern is linked to the older Tate Gallery via a boat on the Thames, allowing visitors to see both offerings during their stay in the capital as well as plenty of the river.
