Stressed and unhappy workers 'cost a business money'

Date: 24/03/2009

Companies need to focus on the well-being of their employees if they are to improve performance over the long-term, an expert has warned.

Diane Stafford, writing for the Charlotte Observer, said that team building with reward and recognition could be conducive to the working environment as a motivational tool, although simple communication works wonders for the office.

Speaking to psychiatrist, professor and author Judith Orloff, it was established that techniques employed by a boss to help in motivating employees needs to target the off switch of a person's negative thoughts about their working situation.

Despite this, it was highlighted that worst-case scenarios also had to be taken into account when dealing with workers to ensure they are not affected in a personal way by tragedy, or other unconsidered factors such as caffeine, sugar, arguments and cynicism.

Employers should not get too involved in the personal lives of their team, however, with David Noer of the News Record recently stating there is a danger that the bond could get too close and jeopardise the office dynamic should job cuts happen.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19089927-ADNFCR
