Stress must be 'addressed as soon as possible'

Date: 29/07/2009

Workplace stress is an increasingly common occurrence in the current economic climate and must be addressed as soon as the first signs of it appear, according to a new report.

The Irish Independent spoke of a trend known as 'presenteeism' - the complete opposite of absenteeism where employees feel the need to work early, stay late and be constantly keeping in touch with office goings-on when on holiday, leading to burnout and heightened levels of stress.

It is more regularly-occurring when people are worried about losing their jobs, though performance and health takes a huge knock, the newspaper continued.

The Irish Independent recommended that managers must boost people's morale by giving praise and remove any focus from finding faults, perhaps bringing in incentives and recognition in a more organised way.

By using recognition and other motivational techniques in consumer-facing businesses, the Retail Council of Canada believes companies can improve the quality of customer service and experience through improved engagement from happier staff.
