Stress management 'key to leadership and motivation'

Date: 21/09/2010

Effective stress management is a key aspect of business leadership and motivation, it has been claimed.

According to new guidelines produced by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Acas and the Health, Work and Wellbeing programme, employers must do their utmost to minimise workplace stress.

In 'Work-related stress: what the law says', the organisations remind employers of their legal obligations surrounding the health concern.

Commenting on the issue, Dame Carol Black, national director for health and work, said: "It is in employers' interests to manage stress at work proactively and not just assume all staff are coping, particularly in a tough economic environment where many employees are under pressure to do more with less."

Her comments come after CIPD's recent quarterly Employee Outlook survey, which showed that work-related stress had increased during the economic downturn - something which could undermine leadership and motivation.

Recently, John Hannett, general secretary of Usdaw, said that employee motivation was more important than ever in the wake of the global economic slump.
