Staff retention is 'top priority'

Date: 27/08/2009

Although many companies will want to secure better standards of performance with incentives and recognition, the very bottom line ought to be the primary focus of any firm, according to one expert.

Mike Wessinger, the president of PointClickCare.com, told the Montreal Gazette that success to his organisation is measured by employee loyalty, emphasising that he sees the human resources as the "absolute key to our success".

As part of his incentives and recognition programme, each employee has around £6 spent on their lunch - something he says is either cost-neutral or saving money in the long run.

Explaining his philosophy on the situation, Mr Wessinger continued: "If somebody crosses the street [to take another job] for an extra $5,000 in salary and it takes somebody else seven months of ramp-up time to replace that person, what does that cost?"

This week, Rupert Emson, the co-founder of recruitment firm Vero Screening, told This is Money that his organisation is unable to deliver benefits such as free healthcare but focuses on team building corporate events, particularly healthy ones, to keep staff happy.
