Staff 'not motivated solely by money'

Date: 17/12/2008

Regardless of the current economic climate, the use of staff incentives such as a free holiday or new shoes to improve business performance will improve a company's bottom line, it has been said.

Speaking to News.com in Australia, tyre aficionado Len Kennedy and his wife told of how the investment in one designer of incentive programs has helped him keep his company on top.

In an interview with the news provider, sector expert Mercedes Trautwein said that the change in the economy, if anything, emphasised the need to focus on the happiness and development of staff.

She continued: "If you remove incentives now you can do long-term damage to your business.

"The key is to communicate the changes. If a reward for staff is rudely removed you will actually inflame rather than motivate."

Ms Trautwein also highlighted the role of certain characters in business culture, noting that it did not have to be the leading person in sales to win the award.

The government's Business Link service agreed with Ms Trautwein's sentiments and advises businesses that it is a solid investment as it persuaded people to join the business and increased loyalty, morale and staff motivation.ADNFCR-2060-ID-18933316-ADNFCR
