Smart leaders 'motivate through communication and recognition'
Date: 04/03/2009
Recognition schemes and communication should be central to a manager's ethos in the workplace if they want to get the most out of their staff, it has been claimed.
Steve O'Kane, a businessman and president of A Duie Pyle, told Smart Business Philadelphia that without motivation his company would not have made the profits they had in 2007.
The expert noted that communication is the first step to the goal of motivating employees.
He emphasised that above all employees want to do well in their job, with reward and recognition being central to this.
Mr O'Kane continued: "So when they feel that they've been given the tools to excel, when they've been given the environment where excellence is recognised and then when they've been recognised for an excellent performance, they are all motivated."
His comments follow those made by Mark McCartney, the head of executive development at Cranfield University. He told Marketing Week that investing in employees through team-building events and recognition programmes is always a good step forward.
