Sheffield venues generate £12m for local economy

Date: 15/09/2009

The city of Sheffield is benefiting from the popularity of its event spaces with businesses looking to host team building conferences and live brand experiences, it has been announced.

Such is the opinion of Sheffield International Venues, which revealed that 890 business events during the last financial year saw the local economy benefit to the tune of £12.7 million.

The group said that 151,439 delegates attended such locations as the Don Valley Stadium, City Hall Sheffield and Ponds Forge, with Dominic Stokes, the general manager of the group, explaining the targets of the organisation.

He said: "One of our key objectives is to maximise the economic impact of our events for the city and these figures show that as a business-tourism destination, we are up there with traditional destinations such as London and Birmingham."

Other places on the portfolio of Sheffield International Venues include the English Institute of Sport, the Hillsborough Leisure Centre and four golf courses around the city.
