Reward and recognition should be 'primary focus' ahead of wages

Date: 05/02/2010

People are being warned that while many businesses may be focused on fiscal situations, the importance of human resources is still at the forefront of good management.

Anne Elliott, the managing director of EMA Business & Management Consultancy, explained to the Local Government Chronicle that the challenge is for both workers and staff to think past pay and salary, despite their importance, adding that incentives and recognition can be just as important in morale and commitment maintenance.

She asserted: "Employers should begin by testing the temperature with staff through, for example, feedback from 1:1s and team meetings, discussion with the union or staff forum, exit interviews and staff surveys."

Questions to staff may want to focus on additional benefits, the use of sales or staff incentives for higher performances and their usefulness, the provision of learning and career advancement opportunities as well as the general working environment for staff.

One-fifth of employees have admitted to a recent survey by Kronos that they have called in sick when they were not ill in the first place, highlighting employee morale issues.
