Katy Nicholson, Researcher for the Keep Britain Working campaign, claimed that offering staff the option of taking a sabbatical can be a great way to achieve this.
She emphasised the value that this approach had during the recession, where this was used as part of a strategy to retain skilled people during the downturn at a lower cost.
Ms Nicholson said that this can often have a knock-on effect on employee motivation and the amount of energy members of staff can bring to the workplace.
She said: "The people who've had time off are returning refreshed, full of new ideas and with greater appreciation of their employer's commitment to their long-time careers."
Despite this, recent research by Pricewaterhouse Coopers has found that the reward and recognition scheme that employees appreciate most is having the option to work flexibly, which 47 per cent of respondents selected.
