People must understand the necessity for reward and recognition of abilities and skills in the workplace if employees are going to work productively, according to one specialist.
Speaking to Manufacturing Business Technology, Roy Saunderson, president of the Recognition Management Institute told of how more personable staff meetings and team building could bring about a more comfortable environment in the workplace.
Using the problematic car production industry of America, Mr Saunderson emphasised that the tough times caused many people to doubt their abilities, something which needed to be addressed through constant one-on-one updates with workers who wanted to know how they are doing.
He continued: "Lack of recognition has been identified as a source of stress independent of the turmoil we are in, so give specific and meaningful praise and recognition as often as you can."
Memorabilia producer Jostens says that staff recognition abolishes an "Us vs Them" attitude in the office as well as allowing managers and low-level employees alike to appreciate one another for all things they may come up against while at work.
