One organisation has had the initiative to combine their reward and recognition scheme with a corporate social responsibility project.
Spring Group, one of the UK's largest staffing specialists, told Personnel Today that it decided that its previous reward strategy to send high achievers to Dubai was a little too self-indulgent, instead looking towards a trip to South Africa to work with Action for Children.
The firm argued that the chance to help out at Beacon Valley's Alpine Primary School in the Western Cape was the perfect way to give recognition to those who aimed highly at work, creating a balanced experience and fulfilling participants on a personal and moral level.
It also inspired Spring Group to contribute to schools in the immediate vicinity.
Managing director Aidan Anglin explained: "We want to embed this kind of event in our culture.
"Working in a local situation such as this makes you realise you can make a real difference to people's lives."
Action for Children has been caring for vulnerable young people since 1869 and was founded by Methodist minister Thomas Stephenson.
