Retribution-style behaviour 'could be risked' in low-morale workplace

Date: 29/04/2010

Mistreatment of staff will always end in failure, according to a business specialist.

Dan Bowser of the Durango Herald quoted a story regarding a woman who, under a draconian management regime that belittled her actions, decided to compensate herself through complaining - lowering overall morale - and even stealing company assets.

While he did not condone it in the slightest, he explained that no business expert would treat employees so poorly because it is not right and also due to the fact it is poor business practice, as such actions "always have a price" and the owner is not aware of the price being paid.

Suggesting team building conferences and other bonding activities, he continued: "Employees are truly your most important asset. Treat them as such and the rewards can be considerable. Abuse them, and you may never know the true cost of your actions."

Jeff Knight, a consultant at Tonic Marketing Solutions, recently told Mortgage Strategy that staff must feel valued, trusted and respected if bosses are to succeed in a team building conference.
