Retain and motivate, expert recommends

Date: 20/04/2009

Although repeated rounds of layoffs may have affected a number of businesses across the country, managers must still look into retaining and motivating employees at every possible moment, it has been said.

Rachel Solomon of respected American newspaper the Wall Street Journal stated that talented employees will always have the option to move jobs despite the downturn, meaning it is still important for management to consider morale as well as reward and recognition.

She said that to truly reach employees, short-term large rewards are a "recipe for disaster" as it can demotivate individuals who are further down the corporate ladder if their higher-performing counterparts are receiving them.

Furthermore, investment in the workplace to make it a more comfortable area to work in is good, as is the inclusion of individuals in a cost-cutting meeting which can get a lot out of employees while improving morale at the same time.

Last week, Jeffrey Gitomer of the Eagle Tribune stated that employee achievements in a reward and recognition programme must be made as public as possible.
