Respect 'key to motivating employees'

Date: 13/01/2009

Treating people with respect is a key element of recognition programmes and motivating employees, one expert advises.

In difficult economic times when staff may be worried about redundancy, bosses must include their employees as part of the solution, human resources expert Douglas Duncan tells the Los Angeles Times.

Any goals, incentive programmes and team building events should be based on the economic reality and employers must not remain silent about difficulties, he suggests.

"Recognition from leaders will make all the difference in your company morale," Mr Duncan concludes.

Furthermore, bosses should talk to their workers every day, even if that is just to say hello and thank them for working hard.

Earlier this month, one expert warned that threats to job security can result in lower employee morale.

HR Solutions chief executive Kevin Sheridan pointed out that engaged employees have less regard for job loss and these people should be aided so they do not underperform.
