Recognition programmes 'only work well with manager input'
Date: 30/01/2009
Although recognition schemes which work on a peer-to-peer level are a good way to show appreciation and help in motivating employees, managers must join in to make them successful, it has been stated.
Rebecca R Hastings of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) spoke of the need to involve everyone in the workplace in recognition programmes.
She spoke to president and founder of the Recognition Management Institute Roy Saunderson, the author of Giving the Real Recognition Way, who noted the importance of peer-to-peer systems as helpful to the flow of a workplace, particularly given that employees see each other more than managers.
However, this should not be solely left to employees to oversee, he stated.
Mr Saunderson continued: "Managers are so pushed that they are looking for any excuse they can to get out of being hands on.
It was added: "Managers need to use the programme, talk up the programme and supplement it with their own comments about those who have received recognition."
The SHRM is the world's biggest professional association which is devoted to the management of human resources.
