Recognition programmes "crucial" during recession

Date: 08/07/2009

Recognition programmes are not only affordable, but are crucial during the recession, one promotional expert suggests.

Now more than ever managers need to lead and motivate their employees, says Tom Miller of promotional products firm T R Miller.

"We continually reward each other as reinforcement of the journey we've taken to reach our goals," he commented, pointing out that the combination of self-empowerment and recognition is a powerful motivator.

He urges managers to use recognition programmes to demonstrate to staff that they are recognised and appreciated when financial times are tough.

Mr Miller advises the use of personal items such as clothing or mugs, rather than money, in recognition programmes, as they provide visibility and pride.

Peer pressure can also be a powerful motivator, author Harvey Mackay stated this week.

It is particularly successful for younger employees, he added.
