Recognising contributions 'key to motivation'

Date: 23/10/2009

Sales incentives and other forms of recognition are important facets of motivation, a leading motivational expert has suggested.

Patrick Lencioni, Author of Three Signs of a Miserable Job, indicates that a lack of recognition or measurement of progress can both contribute to creating an unhappy employee, reports the Post Bulletin.

Setting out clear goals for each individual at work can both enhance recognition of their contribution to the company, by letting them know what they do matters, according to article authors Kristen Asleson and Kim Radke.

They added that the key to success is to let employees "know what they do matters, and remember, that motivating people is fairly easy".

Chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute Ruth Spellman recently suggested that flexible working is a great way to keep employees motivated during the economic downturn.

She added that this can also be an excellent way to stave off redundancies when finances are tight.
