Recession is 'valuable opportunity for managers'
Date: 27/01/2009
The economic downturn presents a valuable opportunity for managers to get hands-on with motivating their staff, it is suggested.
Employers should recognise that during a recession it can make sense to spend more on corporate event planners, Management Issues states.
It explains that research by Cranfield School of Management shows that firms which invest in their staff are best-placed to save money, improve employee motivation and increase retention.
Any money spent on motivating the workforce should have an emphasis on team building training, adds business advice expert Josh Bersin.
He advises firms to think differently about corporate away days and other events and look to use them as a way to increase the breadth of learning.
Consultant Jon Katzenbach also advocates the benefits of employee motivation in helping firms survive the recession.
This week, he told Business Week that employers can use incentive programmes to motivate staff.
