Progression more important than pay

Date: 25/10/2010

Progression is more important than pay when it comes to employee motivation, it has been claimed.

According to reward and recognition expert Adam Dachis, money has always been seen as the main motivator in the workplace, however, he believes that career progression can play a much more significant role in worker engagement.

Writing for lifehacker.com, Dachis said: "When it comes to creative work, external motivations are just not cutting it. Money doesn't inspire better performance."

He added: "Personally, while I definitely enjoy having money, I've found that it's an extremely poor motivation to do better work."

Mr Dachis concluded that instilling the right outlook in staff is key to keeping them motivated and ensure that even the most difficult of tasks are embarked upon with an air of positivity.

The Chartered Management Institute recently claimed that regular pay increments are not possible following the economic downturn and businesses need to get more creative with their reward and recognition programmes as a result.
