Performance problems 'linked to leadership expectations'

Date: 30/03/2009

Managers are more likely to select only a few employees when picking out many for additional tasks as opposed to giving everyone a chance, it has emerged.

According to new research carried out by Novations Group, leaders are more inclined to base their choices of people on predictable performance as opposed to potential performance, in turn risking the motivation of the employees who are left out.

Over 45 per cent of respondents stated they would only select certain people for tasks, with fewer than 35 per cent stating they offered opportunities for everyone they employ.

Commenting on the results, Novations senior vice-president Gerard Lupacchino said: "At a time when employers are requiring reduced workforces to sustain levels of productivity, managers seem to spend more time proving their assumptions about capacity rather than building the capability of more people on their teams."

Last week, the Health & Safety Executive announced a work-related stress website which aims to improve performance in offices around the country.
