Just because a company cannot offer pay rises to its employees during the tough economic climate does not mean that staff should go unrecognised.
According to HR expert Melissa Hulsey, businesses that want to attract top-flight staff and keep employee motivation high must find other ways to reward their staff.
Speaking to Smart Business Online, she claimed that initiatives such as sales incentives programs do not necessarily have to be cash based.
Hulsey, president and chief executive officer of the Ashton Group, said: "By creating a plan that suits your specific work environment, you end up with a happier, healthier and more productive staff."
She suggested that appropriate reward and recognition programmes would not only lead to a boost in morale, but also increase staff retention.
"We all feel the need to be appreciated. Recognition of a job well done communicates that our work is valued and respected," she concluded.
Cotswold District Council recently introduced a chocolate-based reward and recognition program to help motivate staff.
