One size fits all employee motivation 'won't work'

Date: 12/10/2010

Taking a one size fits all approach to employee motivation will not work.

According to leadership and motivation expert Christian Schappel, you cannot expect to engage with every member of staff using the same techniques as no strategy will work for everyone.

Writing for HR Morning, Mr Schappel said that businesses should try a variety of engagement initiatives in order to get the most from their workers; including offering flexible working, training opportunities and sales incentives.

"Tailored rewards programmes are a must to maximize employee productivity these days. But for them to work, they must be built with a strong foundation," he said.

He claimed that offering staff a choice when it comes to deciding on a reward and recognition programme will make employee motivation initiatives more meaningful.

Mr Schappel also noted the importance of being consistent with reward and recognition across an organisation, as this would help avoid alienating certain members of staff.

Recent research from the Chartered Management Institute showed that boosting employee engagement does not have to be a costly affair.
