Older workers 'can prove valuable in team building'

Date: 03/02/2009

Older workers at a firm are a valuable asset to companies in the credit crunch, such as in playing a valuable role in team building for a company, it has been stated.

According to the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), many businesses are looking to cut staff and more experienced workers are often top of the list due to their higher salaries.

However, the LSC noted that older workers may contribute to helping with motivating employees as they are more naturally motivated by the job, with many of them citing a sense of purpose, stress reduction and social engagement as motivating forces for themselves in the job market.

West Midlands LSC research advisor James Davison said: "The proportion of the workforce at the upper end of the age scale is increasing so it is encouraging that employers value the particular skills and experience that this cohort offers."

This information may help companies question the role of different employees when planning a corporate event to improve staff performance.

Beginning its work in 2001, the LSC is a non-departmental public body which has an annual budget of over £10 billion.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19006445-ADNFCR
