Northern Rail workers to strike over bank holiday pay

Date: 21/12/2010

Northern Rail workers are the latest to be suffering low employee motivation this Christmas, and will strike over bank holiday pay.

The rail workers union, RMT, has announced that around 1,000 members will stage a two-day strike on December 27th and 28th, after National Rail refused to give staff double pay for working on bank holidays.

However Northern Rail has said that the workers' demands are 'over and above' previous agreements, and said they were 'disappointed' at the decision to strike.

Bob Crow, RMT general secretary, said: "The spirit of old Scrooge is alive and well on Northern Rail and our conductor members have shown in this ballot that they will not be treated as second-class citizens this Christmas.

"You only have to look at the sporting calendar to see that these days are full-on public holidays everywhere other than in the minds of the senior management at Northern Rail."

The strike action follows a number of other high-profile walk-outs, as British Airways (BA) workers have been striking throughout the year about pay, staffing and holiday perks.

And in November journalists at the BBC staged strikes over a row about pension pay.
