North Dorset council keeps staff engaged

Date: 07/12/2009

High staff morale has been achieved through a unique approach to staff communication through team building conferences, according to a new report.

People Management revealed that North Dorset District Council has been aiming to save jobs after a large number of cuts to the workforce were brought about by the current economic climate.

The local authority was forced to save £2.4 million when central government cut its budget by around 25 per cent, with the bosses of the organisation liaising with its workers to find out ways they could make cuts yet maintain jobs.

Commenting on the team building conferences, the council's chief executive Liz Goodall said: "We held a lot of meetings to explain the budget situation and let everybody know what money was being spent on.

"These meetings, or workshops, helped with staff and community engagement."

In a survey for intotheblue.co.uk last month which spoke to 1,168 businesses across the UK, it was found that 48 per cent of managing directors send their employees to team building conferences and days out to maintain morale.
