Newcastle 'could be great for corporate events'

Date: 25/03/2009

The continuing regeneration of the north-east city of Newcastle could persuade many people to head to the destination to host a corporate event, a new report suggested.

Undergoing what many people have labelled the Bilbao effect - following the lead of the Spanish city in a major overhaul to make Newcastle an attractive and cultural area - the Times highlighted the honours it has going for it.

It was emphasised that the changes were so noticeable that Lonely Planet picked up on the city's beauty and put it in its list of top 30 places to see in the entire world.

There is also a large increase in interest from companies hoping to host team building days or corporate hospitality events in Newcastle, highlighting the need to book well ahead with an events organiser.

Speaking to the newspaper, chief executive of the Newcastle Gatheshead Initiative Andrew Dixon said: "We've turned down over £30 million worth of international conferences because we don't have the space."

Attractions in Newcastle include the Sage, a huge glass opera house on the quayside area of the city, and the Baltic Art Gallery, a major showcase of modern talent.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19092225-ADNFCR
