Motivation is 'necessary' now more than ever

Date: 10/06/2009

Despite the private sector taking the bulk of the blows relating to the recession, the public sector is also anticipated to have major problems in the future, highlighting the need to keep workers happy, one employment organisation has said.

Acas made its comments ahead of its Resilience through Recession national conference it is holding in tandem with the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, stating that a worker-centric focus needed to be adopted to weather the storm.

Ed Sweeney, Acas' chairman, said the impact of the recession on the general working environment is still emerging gradually, yet it continues to be a picture full of challenges, contradictions and complexities.

He emphasised the need for motivating employees, adding: "As the workplace responds to the pressures brought about by the downturn, it has never been more important to engage employees and maintain morale. Otherwise there is an increased risk of disputes arising."

Acas stands for the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service and aims to improve working life through better employment practice and relations.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19210468-ADNFCR
