Motivation 'requires conferences and communication events'

Date: 23/01/2009

For employees to be happy and motivated in the workplace five factors must be present, according to one human resources commentator.

The first is respect, which is a "fundamental right", states Susan M Heathfield in an article for About.com.

Part of respect is praise and feedback, she continues, so firms should be looking to recognition programmes to keep employees motivated.

Access to information regarding the firm is another important element of motivation, as is the opportunity to learn new skills and develop capabilities, which could be offered through a team building event or corporate away day.

The final two factors to keeping employees motivated are ensuring they have a say in decisions regarding their jobs and having an effective leader in place for them to follow.

"If these five factors existed in every workplace, productivity, motivation and happiness would soar," Ms Heathfield concludes.

Over her 35-year career in human resources, Ms Heathfield has been involved in more than 2,000 business training sessions.
