A motivational scheme is doomed to failure unless the changes come from a team building perspective, according to an expert.
Speaking to Indian Newslink, Danie Vermeulen, the chief executive of the Kaizen Institute, said that nothing can be achieved unless everyone has a solid input in the process of improving company-wide performance through schemes such as reward and recognition.
He explained that creative and active involvement of employees on all levels is needed for something to work.
Mr Vermeulen continued: "While motivation is critical in improving staff performance, it can be achieved only by equipping and empowering everyone to strive for everyday, everywhere improvement."
He added that efforts must consistently be praised, supported and rewarded, otherwise many may question their role in doing things.
Mr Vermeulen's comments were echoed by Cheryll Watson, who told the Edmonton Journal that reward and recognition is needed if a workforce is to remain happy, even though the recession is tightening budgets.
