Motivating employees "really simple"

Date: 02/01/2009

Keeping people motivated is a "really simple" task, according to one business psychologist.

Motivating employees should involve asking them directly what they get out of their work, advises James Bywater of SHL UK.

"Ask employees to rate different aspects of their job, such as teamwork, variety and autonomy, and concentrate your efforts on what they rate highly," he tells the Times.

Fellow expert Gurnek Bains adds that the feeling of doing something worthwhile can act as a reward and recognition programme.

Such a scheme could involve giving staff the opportunity to pursue an individual interest within their role or encouraging them to take more control over their job.

As many firms merge in order to survive the credit crunch, they could be in need of team building events, one commentator said earlier this month.

Writing for the Mail on Sunday, Jenny Little suggested such programmes could harmonise merged companies.ADNFCR-2060-ID-18953729-ADNFCR
