Employment relations minister Edward Davey has claimed that the government's flexible working plans are to be made more ambitious.
Mr Davey claimed that flexible working opportunities, which have been shown to boost both employee motivation and staff retention, will be extended to all parents with children under the age of 18 as of April 2011.
The move will give 300,000 additional workers the right to request flexible working hours.
Commenting on the proposed changes to British working practices, equalities minister Lynne Featherstone said: "A family-friendly workplace is a business-friendly workplace."
"Companies are missing out on the skills and talents of too many people who are forced to choose between raising a family and having a job," she added.
Current flexible working legislation only applies to parents with children under the age of 16.
American Express believes that flexible working should be part of companies' reward and recognition programmes.
