Morale and confidence 'dropping', survey suggests

Date: 08/10/2009

Companies are losing the trust and morale of their workers slowly, if a new survey is to be believed.

The US Strategic Rewards Survey carried out by WorldatWork and Watson Wyatt discovered that in the last 12 months, employee engagement levels have dropped by an average of nine per cent, though top-performing organisations saw this number fall as far as 25 per cent.

It highlighted a need for better communication between staff and their superiors, as nearly one in three respondents showed less confidence in the management's ability to grow the business, sowing seeds of distrust which may be remedied by team building corporate events.

Laura Sejen, a global director with Watson Wyatt, explained that the results were not surprising.

She continued: "The cumulative impact of all of these changes has been that employees and employers alike are concerned about the impact on quality or customer service, the impact on productivity and closer to home, the impact on engagement and commitment."

WorldatWork, who helped establish trends found in the survey, is a global human resources association which focuses on how incentives and recognition can "attract, motivate and retain a talented workforce".
