Managers must carefully consider their methods of communication with employees, as they could be especially important during team building conferences, it is suggested.
The increasing use of the internet, email and instant messaging is having consequences on how people interact, especially at work, stated Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute.
"Not everyone wants to socialise online, yet the ease of using the internet in this way could blind more enthusiastic managers to the absence of some people or some groups in online networks," she commented.
Managers must be aware of age and gender effects in the use of online communications and consider when an alternative medium for dialogue may be preferred.
According to recruitment scoring website HireScores.com, 18 per cent of managers find it easier to sort out problems virtually, despite nearly two-thirds confessing that this approach is less effective than a face-to-face meeting.
