Managers must 'focus on redundancy survivors'

Date: 21/08/2009

Many managers fail to see the demographic where stress in the current climate applies to the most, it is believed, with many instead providing a lot of support to those who are leaving a company due to redundancy in such a situation.

However, head of good practice services at Acas Gill Trevelyan explained that stress, if work related, must be addressed in those who are surviving job cuts, as the pressure is on them to be much more diligent and perhaps burn themselves out.

She asserts that people must take into account any demands exerted on staff are not too great in light of a downsizing.

Ms Trevelyan continued: "Make sure your managers are trained to manage staff effectively and without resorting to bullying behaviours.

"A manager who is under stress themselves will then often put their staff under stress too."

Acas is a well-respected organisation which aims to improve companies across the country by putting major emphasis on employment relations.ADNFCR-2060-ID-19325392-ADNFCR
