Managers 'able to motivate staff in unique way'

Date: 11/12/2008

The motivation and demoralisation of employees is all down to the manager's unique position, it is claimed.

Small business expert and associate of the Jim Moran Institute Jerry Osteryoung told online resource Tallahassee.com that the responsibility for staff development and happiness for a manager is a hugely important role.

He said: "A bad manager leads by fear, and fear will not work in the long run. Fear creates a wall and precludes staff from taking risks."

In contrast, "A good manager leads by praise and motivation. "

Mr Osteryoung added that one of the main attributes of a manager was to put his team ahead of himself, with motivational techniques such as a company event or a team building exercise helping the cause.

The expert's comments echo the remarks of management expert Martin Haworth last week, who said in an article distributed by Ezine that developing management skills, when combined with training, is a great way to maintain morale of workers in the office.ADNFCR-2060-ID-18925645-ADNFCR
