Low employee motivation revealed at BA as staff vote to strike

Date: 24/01/2011

Employee motivation at British Airways (BA), which has been at a long-term low as a result of ongoing pay disputes, has dipped again as workers have voted in favour of another strike.

Almost 80 per cent of staff have voted for walk-outs, which trade union Unite has previously said revolve around disagreements about reinstatement of staff travel concessions, a review of disciplinary cases related to the strike, restoration of docked pay for staff who were off sick on strike days, trade union facilities at the airline and the revised terms and conditions for new staff.

The strikes are thought to have cost the airline around £150 billion to date.

Unite said that management should "wake up" and listen to their employees.

Len McCluskey, Unite general secretary-designate, said that the voters had expressed their "dissatisfaction" with management at BA.

"Indeed, the turnout and the majority on this occasion are much greater than in the last ballot," he said.

Around 75 per cent of the 10,220 BA workers turned out to vote at the ballot, revealing the lack of staff morale in the company.

"This dispute will be resolved by negotiation, not litigation or confrontation, and it is to negotiation that BA management should now apply itself," Mr McCluskey added.

"We are ready."
