Less than half of bosses will throw their workers a Christmas party

Date: 26/11/2010

Christmas may be a time for celebrations, but employee motivation will not receive a boost this year as many workers will go without office parties, according to a study.

Research by Vouchercodes.co.uk shows that less than half (46 per cent) of workers will be treated to a work party this year.

According to Employee Benefits, Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk, said: "As UK businesses continue to feel the pinch, Christmas parties understandably slide further down the financial agenda and employees also feel the strain on their personal budgets."

This echoes news from earlier this month, in which Scottish workers lamented having to stump up for their own Christmas parties after firms such as Stanford Life, Aegon and Northern Rock choose not to pay because of the financial climate.

Many experts advise employers to boost staff morale with rewards and recognition, and although this survey shows many staff may miss out, those working at Tesco and Siemens will have something to celebrate this Christmas.

Both companies have rewarded their workers' for their commitment over the past year, as Tesco offered benefits of £55 million, and Siemens announced a £267 million staff bonus programme.
