Leadership motivation offered at CIPD annual conference

Date: 11/11/2010

"Pensions is a supertanker and we all have to start to steer it in the right direction," it has been claimed in a speech to boost employer leadership and motivation.

In an advice session at the CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition, Jane Vass from Age UK urged employers to take the reins and educate their employees about the changes to pensions to ensure staff motivation and morale is not lost.

She said: "There are big changes on the way for all of us but it will be a win for employers, employees and the state."

Last month there was a public outcry at the proposed pension changes, which appear to hit the poorest badly and women worst as their state pension age will rise to be equal with men.

Changes to pensions include a raised statutory retirement age, removal of a default retirement age, and reduced pension provisions.

And workers also face auto-enrolment and the National Employment Savings Trust, something which Steve Delo, chief executive of Pan Governance, said would create a lot of problems, especially with administration for employers.

Another business head, Carmel Bell, offered advice at the session and said to tackle the new system, more staff need to understand the pension system than do now.
